The EFC Foundation and 100 other social organizations have signed the letter defending the independence of the media
One of the key values we believe in at the EFC Foundation is democracy – and democracy cannot exist without free media, independent of political authorities or interest groups. Our Patron, Roman Czernecki, taught children and young people that critical thinking is one of the most crucial values in life. To develop that competence, we need access to different sources of information, and the freedom to choose and verify them. In order to live in a free country, we need free media. Therefore, we strongly support the protest of media organizations, fighting for their autonomy and protecting the common good. You will find full text of the letter below:
Social organizations stand in solidarity defending independence of the media
There is no democracy without free media, independent of political authorities or interest groups. There can be no democracy without a strong, autonomous civil society, capable of self-organization and communicating the needs and aspirations of the general public. Without free media, there would be no social control over public institutions, authorities, police, economic structures, and participants of public life. Free and responsible media provide reliable information, popularize knowledge, create space for an exchange of ideas, open debates, and political disputes.
Independent media relying on accountable, responsible journalism are indispensible in the era of mass, individualized communication made possible by the Internet. While everyone has the right to their own opinion, not everyone is qualified to analyze increasingly large data streams and translate them into useful information. Not everyone has the resources or the skill to conduct complex, strenuous journalistic inquiries to reveal important facts concerning the world of politics or business.
The role of autonomous media is even more important today, when the space of social communication becomes a minefield of dangerous activities directed against societies, such as spreading lies, fear and insecurity, disseminating conspiracy theories, and provoking hostility towards other people. At the time of growing disinformation, ever-present fake news and hate speech, the voice of independent media that rely on facts and opinions based on sound knowledge and evidence, becomes a significant point of reference allowing the public to ascertain fact from fiction. This vital role of independent media is particularly visible now, during the pandemic.
To pursue their social mission, the media need legal guarantees of freedom and autonomy. They also need funding sources independent from state authorities. An important – and, in many cases, the sole source of income, are advertising revenues. Therefore, the attempt to limit those revenues through administrative and political decisions is an attack on material foundations of functioning of the media and, consequently, on their freedom and independence.
The government bill project concerning „advertising revenue-based contributions” – in other words, an additional tax strictly limiting advertising revenues, has no substantive grounds. It is nothing more than an assault on autonomous media, an attempt to limit their autonomy and impact. Moreover, this attempt is being made during the pandemic crisis that has compromised the functioning of many organizations and companies, including media institutions.
As representatives of various organizations and members of the Polish civil society we strongly object to the government bill draft directed against the free, independent media. We condemn every attempt to restrict their freedom and autonomy. We express our solidarity with the protest of media companies which fight not only for their own independence, but also for the common good.
